Continue to focus on the RIS four core beliefs: It’s about Kids! —Accountability—Transparency—Communication. Positives across the district……….. Russell Primary School (From the desk of Mr. Cassity) We had very positive week because we have Raised the Praise and Minimized the Criticize (Todd Whitaker). Here are some good things that happened this past week at RPS:
Russell-McDowell Intermediate (From the desk of Mrs. Wright)
Russell Middle School (From the desk of Mr. Moore) From Mr. Vanhoose - After a year full of many successes, our Russell Middle School Academic Team finished strong at the State Finals! This year, 363 middle schools started out at District Governor's Cup, and RMS was 6th overall. Naturally, I would like to see us place higher, especially since we haven't finished first since 2003, but our students, coaches, and school should be proud of their final ranking. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication it takes to achieve such success, and I firmly believe our students will take these experiences with them through high school, college, and to bright futures beyond. At the State Finals, the top ten students in each written assessment event, composition, and FPS, along with the top eight quick recall teams, earn points for their team. Tiebreakers can make a huge difference (look at Math). I am very pleased that 7 of 15 RMS tests taken were scored 40 or above! From Coach Howard - Archery had a good day yesterday at the State Tournament. I was hoping for a higher score but our team score was 3149, which qualifies our team for Nationals. Our team finished 36 out of 62 in all and we beat Elliott County.
Russell High School (From the desk of Mrs. Chaffin)
Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) Our SkillsUSA members represented us well this past week as they participated in the regional competition at ACTC’s Technology Drive Campus. Our students demonstrated their knowledge and hard work during these events, and were very impressive. We appreciate Mr. Parsons, Mr. Williams, Mr. Runyon, and Ms. Layne who worked so hard with our students in preparation for this event. Our results included:
Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) Preschoolers had a fun-filled week of Spring and Easter activities. They really enjoyed learning about baby animals that are born in Spring. We wrapped up our week with an Easter egg hunt and Easter treats. Next week we plan to begin growing our own plants and learning about life cycles. What’s happening at central office / district this week?
It’s a great day to be a Red Devil! Have a great week Russell! Sean

Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) We want to congratulate our FBLA members on a very successful regional competition this week. They represented us very well and demonstrated their knowledge in multiple areas. We had several students place and qualify for state competition. See more photos here.
Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) This week Preschoolers used their problem solving skills to make Leprechaun traps. Unfortunately, the Leprechauns were too smart for us and avoided our traps. We met with another community helper this week, an EMT, and were able to tour an ambulance!! Thursday was very exciting for us! We took a trip to the Highlands Museum and ate lunch in the park! What an exciting and busy week for Preschool!! Registration for 2016-2017 is March 24th from 6-8! It’s a great day to be a Red Devil! Have a great week Russell! Sean RE: Incident this morning at RMIS
At or about 7:15 AM, a domestic dispute took place in the parking lot of RMIS. RMIS administration intervened and the individual fled the scene. Shortly thereafter the Flatwoods Police department arrived and assessed the situation. Police apprehended the individual less than five minutes after fleeing the campus. Across the district, RHS, RMS, RATC, and RPS went into a lockout situation to protect our children. District officials arrived and remained at RMIS until the incident was resolved. Overall, we continue to look at ways to protect and prevent these types of situations, but they do at times occur. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority and we will continue to be diligent in these matters. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to call my office today. M. Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) We kicked off our SkillsUSA competitions this week at RATC! We had fourteen students compete in the Health Sciences competition and they did a fantastic job. The students competed in CPR, two-man CPR and First Aid, and were judged by three local members of our community: Diane Williams (Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital), Vanessa Flannery (Morehead State University College of Nursing), and our own Jenny Bates. We appreciate these members of the community taking their time to come support our students in our first ever competition for Health Sciences, and Ms. Layne and Mr. Parsons for their hard work in organizing the event. We look forward to seeing our students compete in the other events next week! Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) Preschoolers had an awesome week exploring Community Helpers. Officer Tackett was kind enough to visit our students and talk about the job of a School Resource Officer and Police Officer. Our students really enjoyed Officer Tackett! This week we are expecting a visit from Flatwoods EMS and we will be taking a field trip to the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center. What’s happening at central office / district this week?
