“If you’re not making mistakes, then you’re not doing anything. I’m positive that a doer makes mistakes.”—John Wooden Each week I will highlight some of our opening day themes: Vision Statement #4—Our Community shares our desire to develop highly skilled and productive citizens. RIS Mission: Our mission is to inspire and empower all students to reach their maximum potential: one student, one lesson, one day at a time. Things I CAN Control…
Continue to focus on the RIS four core beliefs: It’s about Kids! —Accountability—Transparency—Communication. Positives across the district……….. Russell Primary School (From the desk of Mr. Cassity) We had a very busy at RPS this week. Check out our exciting week:

Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) The students of the Russell Area Technology Center had another awesome experience, thanks to the GoalEd program. As a result of the program that was created thanks to a grant received by Kentucky Power and KEDC, our MNA students were able to Skype in to a knee replacement surgery and ask questions of the doctor and his team while it was being performed. Students were able to watch this surgery in its entirety and to see each step that goes along with the process. We appreciate Mrs. Tammy Vonderheide who joined us a representative of KEDC today and was able to see the great aspects of this grant in action. We are very blessed to not only have great students and staff, but also a community who is very much engaged in the education of our students, and very supportive of the work we do within each of our buildings! We also appreciate Mrs. Kristina Perry who is always willing to join us in these events and documents them for our schools and community! Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) This week the Little Scientists in Room 207 experimented with the light & sound circuit, played with new animal puzzles, & taste tested astronaut ice cream. We decided we liked the original treat better though!! Next week, we are going to make Oobleck in honor of Dr. Seuss!! What’s happening at central office / district this week?

She advances to state competition. · RHS Academic Team competed in Regional Governor’s Cup competition. · Madison Darnell has been nominated for Miss Basketball, representing the 16th Region. · Both Varsity Basketball teams locked up #1 District Seeds for next week’s District Tournament. · National Spanish Honor Society members attended State Conference. Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) Students at RATC are gearing up for the Dare to Dream Entrepreneurship competitions that will begin in March. We have some very creative students who attend our district, and these competitions allow them to explore opportunities that put this creativity into action. Last year, with the help of our business teachers, our students were highly successful both in the area competition and in the tri-state contests as well. We appreciate Mr. Fosson and Mr. Thompson who took time to assist and share ideas with our students this week. We are blessed to live in such a great community of people who love being partners with our students and teachers and we thank them for their continued willingness to make events like this happen! Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) This week the Little Scientists in Room 207 sorted reptiles, explored with our new telescope, & experimented with the old school volcano. Next week, we plan to taste test astronaut ice cream & create a chart to determine if more of our sweet friends like astronaut ice cream better than the traditional treat. Preschool is sweet!! Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) One of the important aspects of the education we provide at RATC is our pathways. Students follow pathways that allow them the skills to be successful in the future, and by successfully following these they are able to obtain industry certifications that give them greater opportunities in the workforce. This week we want to say a big thank you to the counselors we work with in preparing our students. From the time they are in middle school, Mr. Casto is sharing information about the possibilities available to them in the future, preparing them for these opportunities we offer. Each year as high school students, the counselors advise them as they make these plans for their future and assist in assuring our students follow these pathways. Mrs. McConda, Mrs. Perry and Mr. Casto are such great supporters of our students and we appreciate the effort they put into helping them achieve success! Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) This week our Science explorations have continued with our experiment with conversation hearts, new magnifying glasses, & a new set of binoculars. As for next week, we will be conducting an experiment with the old school volcano, new plastic animals & a habitat for them, & a light & sound touch circuit!! Room 207 is full of Scientists!! Continue to focus on the RIS four core beliefs: It’s about Kids! —Accountability—Transparency—Communication. Positives across the district……….. Russell Primary School (From the desk of Mr. Cassity) Great week at RPS! Students and teachers celebrated the 100th and 101st days of school this week!! Kindergarten and first grade students made shirts and paraded for all the school to see. We had 30 students who earned Lunch Bunch tickets this week and attended their mini celebrations with Ms. Crager. Lastly, it was awesome to see so many students and staff dressed in blue and orange on Friday in support of Marshall County! Russell-McDowell Intermediate (From the desk of Mrs. Wright)
Russell High School (From the desk of Mrs. Chaffin)
Across the state, we had 4 students place in the Top 10 overall:
The team will be competing at the 2018 Regionals, hosted by Russell HS on February 17.
Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) The students of RATC continue to not only work hard during class, but also in activities outside the classroom. SkillsUSA members are working to prepare for their regional competition later this month, and FBLA members continue to work toward their competition that will take place in March. Our students benefit so much from these Career and Technical Student Organizations, as they are able to take their content from their classes and extend upon it while competing with others throughout the region. Each of our teachers have a role in these organizations and in assisting these students with their preparation and growth in these areas. We also want to take a second to brag on another group who makes their home here at RATC. The band is preparing for their KMEA performance, and it has been very impressive to see the time and hard work they continue to put into their preparation, something they do almost daily throughout the year as they prepare for each of their different activities. It is awesome to see so many students extending their school day to engage in activities they love and to be learning such important information all at the same time. Educating our kids is not only about what takes place inside classrooms, but it is also about these extra and co-curricular investments that help grow the entire student, and we appreciate the many adults who take the time to engage in these investments, not just in this building, but throughout the entire campus! Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) This week we continued our Science exploration of light & shadows with our newest STEAM challenge: we planned & then created a robot out of our hollow blocks. We turned off the lights & then traced the structure's shadow on a large piece of bulletin board paper with a flashlight. We also added a super cool apron that shows us what is inside of our bodies to our Science center. Our newest classroom job of veterinarian has quickly become a class favorite, as the job requires feeding our bearded dragon, Spike. We are looking forward to next week's STEAM challenge of the old school volcano. Science is so much fun! What’s happening at central office / district this week?
