Students in Mr. Parsons’ PLTW classes have been working hard this week to design vehicles with a set of predetermined supplies. This culminated on Friday, as they tested them to see which group created the vehicle that would travel the farthest. This was a great activity to not only focus on design and production, but also the very important skills of communication and teamwork. We appreciate the work that goes into planning these types of critical thinking experiences that mimic what students will face in the field! Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton)

Russell Family,
On March 23, 2018 our Intermediate School hosted a "Donuts with Dads" event and on March 30, 2018, our Primary School PTA hosted a “Donuts with Dad” event. Today, I was made aware the facility we purchased the donuts from had an employee diagnosed with Hepatitis A. We have contacted both the facility where the donuts were purchased and the Ashland-Boyd County Health Department. The diagnosed employee was not involved in the making or packaging of the donuts that were part of the Primary & Intermediate School event. The Health Department has indicated to us that the likelihood of contracting Hepatitis A from this exchange is “almost zero”, however, I still wanted to make you aware of what has occurred. Further information is also available from the Ashland-Boyd County Health Department at 324-7181 or the Greenup County Health Department at 473-9838. The safety of our school community is our number one priority. If you have any questions or concerns please contact my office at 836-9679. M. Sean Horne Superintendent Welcome back Russell!! I hope everyone is relaxed and ready for the stretch run. This time of year is critical for the success of our students. Please continue to encourage good attendance and preparation to close out the year on a great note. I also want to commend everyone for their support of each other over the past month. The last month across the state has been a very stressful time for ALL! Your commitment to our state and to our district has been remarkable and has not gone unnoticed. Russell Primary School (From the desk of Mr. Cassity) March Madness is officially here, especially at RPS!! Ms. Gullett has encouraged our students and their classes to read, read, read for a school wide March Madness Contest. Our students are off to a great start as they have begun earning points for their classrooms by logging their reading daily! On Friday, we celebrated reading by dressing as our favorite character. We will have more celebratory days on the last Friday of each week for the month of March. Our PTA is sponsoring a very different kind of fundraiser for us this March. More on that later... Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) Students in Mr. Parsons’ PLTW classes presented and collected data on their puzzle cube projects this week. Class members reviewed the puzzle cubes, with the complexity of the cubes being at the forefront of the discussion. Students in the class then provided feedback to the designer who will now begin work on their redesign based upon that information. In each of our classes throughout the building, our teachers design unique lessons that allow our students the experience of working through problems, as well as the opportunity to see what the process looks like in real-world workplaces. Reed Craigmiles was determined to be the winner of the puzzle cube project. Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) The students of the Russell Area Technology Center had another awesome experience, thanks to the GoalEd program. As a result of the program that was created thanks to a grant received by Kentucky Power and KEDC, our MNA students were able to Skype in to a knee replacement surgery and ask questions of the doctor and his team while it was being performed. Students were able to watch this surgery in its entirety and to see each step that goes along with the process. We appreciate Mrs. Tammy Vonderheide who joined us a representative of KEDC today and was able to see the great aspects of this grant in action. We are very blessed to not only have great students and staff, but also a community who is very much engaged in the education of our students, and very supportive of the work we do within each of our buildings! We also appreciate Mrs. Kristina Perry who is always willing to join us in these events and documents them for our schools and community! Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) One of the important aspects of the education we provide at RATC is our pathways. Students follow pathways that allow them the skills to be successful in the future, and by successfully following these they are able to obtain industry certifications that give them greater opportunities in the workforce. This week we want to say a big thank you to the counselors we work with in preparing our students. From the time they are in middle school, Mr. Casto is sharing information about the possibilities available to them in the future, preparing them for these opportunities we offer. Each year as high school students, the counselors advise them as they make these plans for their future and assist in assuring our students follow these pathways. Mrs. McConda, Mrs. Perry and Mr. Casto are such great supporters of our students and we appreciate the effort they put into helping them achieve success! Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) This week our Science explorations have continued with our experiment with conversation hearts, new magnifying glasses, & a new set of binoculars.
