It's not your goals that will lead to your success but your commitment to the process,” –Jon Gordon, “You Win in the Locker Room First: The 7 C’s to Build a Winning Team in Business, Sports, and Life.” Each week I will highlight some of our opening day themes: Vision Statement #1—Our Students are our top priority! RIS Mission: Our mission is to inspire and empower all students to reach their maximum potential: one student, one lesson, one day at a time. Things I CAN Control…
Continue to focus on the RIS four core beliefs: It’s about Kids! —Accountability—Transparency—Communication. Positives across the district……….. Russell Primary School (From the desk of Mr. Cassity) We had a busy week back from our snow break. Students were excited to get a little outdoor play in as the weather turned for a brief moment on Friday. Teachers rolled up their sleeves this week and dove into some professional learning with the Go Math! Coach. Ms. Karen enlightened us with how to better utilize our resources and much more. We kicked off Jump Rope For Heart with some exciting news...RPS students have raised over $200,000 for the American Heart Association. Russell-McDowell Intermediate (From the desk of Mrs. Wright)

Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) This week has been filled with new and unique opportunities for our students. Thanks to Kentucky Power and KEDC, who received a grant to provide new and innovative ways of learning, our students interacted with people who were hundreds of miles away. Students in Mrs. Wilburn’s class have been studying contracts and labor, so they were given the opportunity to interact with a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame’s staff to review contracts of past and present players of Major League Baseball. They also examined how the players’ union has evolved over time, and how this coincided with the changes in contracts that have occurred. The following day, students in Mrs. Phipps and Mr. Williams’ classes were able to spend time interacting with the author of the book Tech Titans, as she discussed the research and work she did on six of the world’s leading figures in the field of technology. These truly were awesome experiences for our students that resulted from the work of two fantastic community partners. We also want to thank Mrs. Casto and Mrs. Perry for joining us in both of these presentations to assure our technology was working properly and to be part of these interactions with our students. We appreciate the district office team, and their continued efforts to collaborate within the building to help enhance these learning experiences. Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) This week, we continued our Science exploration with a virtual field trip to learn more about caring for our bearded dragon, Spike, experimented with colors, light, & shadows at the light table, examined many things under our new microscope, completed the STEAM challenge of melting a snowman, & made our own snow in the sensory table. The Little Scientists in Room 207 were busy!! Room 208 melted snowmen as part of a STEAM challenge too! They explored shapes in the block area by driving cars on shaped roads and painted a snowy scene after reading The Jacket I Wear In The Snow. What’s happening at central office / district this week?

We are excited to have begun the process of moving our IT classes back into their new and improved classroom. This is a project that has involved a lot of people, including the maintenance department as well as several of our students. The electricity students ran the electric for the classroom under the supervision of Mr. Fields, while the IT students ran the networking under the supervision of Mr. Williams. They did a great job in the classroom, and were able to again see some of the aspects of these real-world activities. We love to see improvements in our building that will allow for better learning environments for our students. We appreciate Mr. Williams and his students designing this area, and the work that has gone into making it ideal for the learning they do each day. Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) This week Mrs. Grizzle's room had a lot of Science lessons taking place due to the children's interest!! We made animal flubber, examined x-rays on our light table, looked at replica animal bones, played with color changing sensory tubes, built structures with magnets, & welcomed our new classroom pet, Spike, our bearded dragon. We will continue our focus on Science this coming week when we make snow in our sensory table & melt a snowman. Lots of Little Scientists in Room 207!! Students have been reviewing their safety standards for our programs as they prepare to continue with their work in our labs and classrooms. We look forward to seeing our students demonstrate their learning by earning industry credentials this spring that they will use as they move into their future! On behalf of the students and staff here at RATC, we also want to give a big THANK YOU to Dave C., Tim, Billy, Dave Y., Danny and Kenny from the maintenance staff, as well as Roy from here in our building, for the great work they continually do for us. It’s a great day to be a Red Devil!! Have a great week Russell! Sean Welcome Back Russell!!!! I’ve outlined all of our opening day themes in this document. Please take the time to review and reflect on each one of these as we move into the New Year. I truly appreciate the hard work and effort from everyone in our district that continues to work hard for OUR kids each and every day. If my office can be of assistance to you, please let me know. Continue to focus on the RIS four core beliefs: It’s about Kids! —Accountability—Transparency—Communication. 1.You don’t look at the clock, and you’re not punching a time card. Your role is not defined by time. 2. You get it done no matter how long it takes. You are “managerless,” meaning no one else has to worry about whether you are getting it done. 3. You realize you are part of something bigger than yourself, and humbly accomplish the goals because of a larger motivation than just you. 4. Giving just the “minimum” amount of effort required to get by without “getting in trouble” doesn’t even cross your mind. 5. Your hard work and excellence is done with pure motives. You are not worried about climbing the ladder or impressing anyone. 6. "We" is much more important than "me." If I win, the team wins. If the team wins, I win. 7. You are willing and motivated to improve daily. Getting better at what you do is not a choice, it’s a requirement. 8. You maintain a high standard of excellence because the team/organization/brand demands it. You don’t want to let anyone else down on the team. 9. The vision compels you to greatness. Not the opposite—“your greatness compelling the vision.” Many leaders get this backwards. 10. Your intentions and goals are clear. I know what I’m getting, and I’m never concerned about any ulterior motives. 11. You are trustworthy. 100 percent. Always, with no exceptions. I know I can count on you. 12. Constant pursuit of the extraordinary, not ordinary. Constant pursuit of unusual, not usual. Constant pursuit of being the best, not average. “Opening day 2017”----“Row the Boat” philosophy by University of Minnesota Head Football coach---PJ Fleck Take the time to watch and review this… What’s happening at central office / district this week?
