Russell Primary School (From the desk of Mr. Cassity) March Madness is officially here, especially at RPS!! Ms. Gullett has encouraged our students and their classes to read, read, read for a school wide March Madness Contest. Our students are off to a great start as they have begun earning points for their classrooms by logging their reading daily! On Friday, we celebrated reading by dressing as our favorite character. We will have more celebratory days on the last Friday of each week for the month of March. Our PTA is sponsoring a very different kind of fundraiser for us this March. More on that later... Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) Students in Mr. Parsons’ PLTW classes presented and collected data on their puzzle cube projects this week. Class members reviewed the puzzle cubes, with the complexity of the cubes being at the forefront of the discussion. Students in the class then provided feedback to the designer who will now begin work on their redesign based upon that information. In each of our classes throughout the building, our teachers design unique lessons that allow our students the experience of working through problems, as well as the opportunity to see what the process looks like in real-world workplaces. Reed Craigmiles was determined to be the winner of the puzzle cube project. Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) This week we had an amazing time at our field trip to the STEAM Lab at McDowell!! We observed all of the animals, saw the big kids sumobots, & looked at all of the technology. We loved creating racecars using Legos!! That was a favorite part of the trip!! We have some very creative students who attend our district, and these competitions allow them to explore opportunities that put this creativity into action. Last year, with the help of our business teachers, our students were highly successful both in the area competition and in the tri-state contests as well. We appreciate Mr. Fosson and Mr. Thompson who took time to assist and share ideas with our students this week. We are blessed to live in such a great community of people who love being partners with our students and teachers and we thank them for their continued willingness to make events like this happen! Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) One of the important aspects of the education we provide at RATC is our pathways. Students follow pathways that allow them the skills to be successful in the future, and by successfully following these they are able to obtain industry certifications that give them greater opportunities in the workforce. This week we want to say a big thank you to the counselors we work with in preparing our students. From the time they are in middle school, Mr. Casto is sharing information about the possibilities available to them in the future, preparing them for these opportunities we offer. Each year as high school students, the counselors advise them as they make these plans for their future and assist in assuring our students follow these pathways. Mrs. McConda, Mrs. Perry and Mr. Casto are such great supporters of our students and we appreciate the effort they put into helping them achieve success! Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) This week our Science explorations have continued with our experiment with conversation hearts, new magnifying glasses, & a new set of binoculars. As for next week, we will be conducting an experiment with the old school volcano, new plastic animals & a habitat for them, & a light & sound touch circuit!! Room 207 is full of Scientists!! Continue to focus on the RIS four core beliefs: It’s about Kids! —Accountability—Transparency—Communication. Positives across the district……….. Russell Primary School (From the desk of Mr. Cassity) Great week at RPS! Students and teachers celebrated the 100th and 101st days of school this week!! Kindergarten and first grade students made shirts and paraded for all the school to see. We had 30 students who earned Lunch Bunch tickets this week and attended their mini celebrations with Ms. Crager. Lastly, it was awesome to see so many students and staff dressed in blue and orange on Friday in support of Marshall County! Russell-McDowell Intermediate (From the desk of Mrs. Wright)

Across the state, we had 4 students place in the Top 10 overall:
The team will be competing at the 2018 Regionals, hosted by Russell HS on February 17.
Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) The students of RATC continue to not only work hard during class, but also in activities outside the classroom. SkillsUSA members are working to prepare for their regional competition later this month, and FBLA members continue to work toward their competition that will take place in March. Our students benefit so much from these Career and Technical Student Organizations, as they are able to take their content from their classes and extend upon it while competing with others throughout the region. Each of our teachers have a role in these organizations and in assisting these students with their preparation and growth in these areas. We also want to take a second to brag on another group who makes their home here at RATC. The band is preparing for their KMEA performance, and it has been very impressive to see the time and hard work they continue to put into their preparation, something they do almost daily throughout the year as they prepare for each of their different activities. It is awesome to see so many students extending their school day to engage in activities they love and to be learning such important information all at the same time. Educating our kids is not only about what takes place inside classrooms, but it is also about these extra and co-curricular investments that help grow the entire student, and we appreciate the many adults who take the time to engage in these investments, not just in this building, but throughout the entire campus! Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) This week we continued our Science exploration of light & shadows with our newest STEAM challenge: we planned & then created a robot out of our hollow blocks. We turned off the lights & then traced the structure's shadow on a large piece of bulletin board paper with a flashlight. We also added a super cool apron that shows us what is inside of our bodies to our Science center. Our newest classroom job of veterinarian has quickly become a class favorite, as the job requires feeding our bearded dragon, Spike. We are looking forward to next week's STEAM challenge of the old school volcano. Science is so much fun! What’s happening at central office / district this week?

Russell Primary School (From the desk of Mr. Cassity) We had a busy week back from our snow break. Students were excited to get a little outdoor play in as the weather turned for a brief moment on Friday. Russell Area Technology Center (From the desk of Mr. Trimble) This week has been filled with new and unique opportunities for our students. Thanks to Kentucky Power and KEDC, who received a grant to provide new and innovative ways of learning, our students interacted with people who were hundreds of miles away. Students in Mrs. Wilburn’s class have been studying contracts and labor, so they were given the opportunity to interact with a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame’s staff to review contracts of past and present players of Major League Baseball. They also examined how the players’ union has evolved over time, and how this coincided with the changes in contracts that have occurred. The following day, students in Mrs. Phipps and Mr. Williams’ classes were able to spend time interacting with the author of the book Tech Titans, as she discussed the research and work she did on six of the world’s leading figures in the field of technology. These truly were awesome experiences for our students that resulted from the work of two fantastic community partners. We also want to thank Mrs. Casto and Mrs. Perry for joining us in both of these presentations to assure our technology was working properly and to be part of these interactions with our students. We appreciate the district office team, and their continued efforts to collaborate within the building to help enhance these learning experiences. Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) This week, we continued our Science exploration with a virtual field trip to learn more about caring for our bearded dragon, Spike, experimented with colors, light, & shadows at the light table, examined many things under our new microscope, completed the STEAM challenge of melting a snowman, & made our own snow in the sensory table. The Little Scientists in Room 207 were busy!! Room 208 melted snowmen as part of a STEAM challenge too! They explored shapes in the block area by driving cars on shaped roads and painted a snowy scene after reading The Jacket I Wear In The Snow. What’s happening at central office / district this week?

We are excited to have begun the process of moving our IT classes back into their new and improved classroom. This is a project that has involved a lot of people, including the maintenance department as well as several of our students. The electricity students ran the electric for the classroom under the supervision of Mr. Fields, while the IT students ran the networking under the supervision of Mr. Williams. They did a great job in the classroom, and were able to again see some of the aspects of these real-world activities. We love to see improvements in our building that will allow for better learning environments for our students. We appreciate Mr. Williams and his students designing this area, and the work that has gone into making it ideal for the learning they do each day. Russell Preschool (From the desk of Mrs. Staton) This week Mrs. Grizzle's room had a lot of Science lessons taking place due to the children's interest!! We made animal flubber, examined x-rays on our light table, looked at replica animal bones, played with color changing sensory tubes, built structures with magnets, & welcomed our new classroom pet, Spike, our bearded dragon.
